Fast and Vigil at Finance Minister Joe Oliver’s office

JOE OLIVER - SIGN THE CLIMATEFAST PLEDGE!
Fast and Vigil at Finance Minister Joe Oliver’s office
7 am to 7 pm, Thursday October 1st, Candlelighting 7 pm

ClimateFast members will hold a fast and vigil for climate action outside the office of Federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver, 511 Lawrence Ave. West, 7 am to 7 pm Thursday October 1st.  Candlelighting 7 – 7:30 pm.

Since 2012 ClimateFast has gathered the signatures of 130 MPs, NDP, Liberal and Green, and many current candidates, for a three part pledge to work in Parliament to:

-end fossil fuel subsidies
-put a price on carbon
-develop a renewable energy plan for Canada.

No Conservatives have signed the pledge.

We will call on Minister Oliver to sign the ClimateFast pledge.

This fasting day is held in conjunction with a world wide day of fasting, held on the first of each month.  This fast will be held on the first of each month until we have a global binding agreement to cut emissions in line with our need to avert a global temperature rise of greater than 2 degrees

This monthly day of fasting was initiated in solidarity with Yeb Sano, the former Philippines climate negotiator, who fasted during the Warsaw climate talks in 2013, while his own country was devastated by Typhoon Haiyan, made much more severe by climate change.

“The future is calling us to speak up now, to stand up now, to call everyone we know to do the same – we must stand together and change direction.  We must transition off fossil fuels and we must do so with utmost urgency”, said Lyn Adamson, member of  ClimateFast, and co-chair of Canadian Voice of Women for Peace.  “The Paris climate talks are happening in December and Canada must be there with a new plan for action.”

“The release of the NDP platform on climate change on September 27th puts climate change directly on the agenda for this election.  The Conservative party must respond with their commitments.”

Vigil participants will hold their banner ‘Hungry for Climate Leadership' and will deliver letters of concern to Joe Oliver’s office.  They will be joined at noon by the ‘elephant in the room’ (the climate crisis).
