CLIMATE EMERGENCY DAY AT QUEEN’S PARK - May 13 th , 2019

On May 13 th  many of you came down to Queen’s Park for the debate on a climate emergency motion introduced by the NDP. We had a good presence in the legislature, about 80 of us there, and we were recognized, many of us . Our petitions were introduced by 5 MPPs from the NDP, Liberals and Greens - 1044 names. Each MPP read the petition, for a meaningful climate plan to keep temperature rise under 1.5 C, and signed the petition in. There were many excellent speeches, although there were few government MPPs there to listen or participate in the debate. The premier was not in the House, and the Environment Minister Rod Phillips was present just to give his comments, and did not stay to listen to the debate. One surprise: we were thanked with a standing ovation by the opposition MPPs for being in the gallery and for speaking up and organizing on the climate crisis. The People’s Climate Plan was mentioned in comments by MPP Jill Andrew.

At the end of the day the vote was against the motion. We weren’t there to witness the final vote as some of us had expressed that this was a climate emergency through words and song. We gathered outside in a circle to share our thoughts, prayers, and songs.

Thank you to all who attended! And to everyone who wrote Doug Ford and their MPP. Together we are making a difference!
