PLEASE HELP US DELIVER LETTERS AND PLEDGE FORMS TO CANDIDATES

TEAM Climate 2021 is an ad hoc network of climate groups and activists in the Toronto area focusing on the 2021 Canadian federal election campaign. We invite you to participate in delivering a letter about the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative (FFNPT) to the candidates in your riding. Each letter will be requesting that candidates individually sign a pledge to support this Initiative.

The municipal governments of Vancouver and Toronto have already officially joined a growing movement around the world supporting the negotiation of a FFNPT in advance of the Glasgow COP26 meeting in November.

The FFNPT is an international initiative to gain commitment to the principles listed below, which are/were very compatible with the “Canada on Fire'' pledge asks of Canada350 (of July 29 and Sep 8)The FFNPT now has a website dedicated to pledges by individual Members of Parliament and nationally-elected officials around the world. The website is: www.fossilfuelfreefuture.org and, as you can see, the list of such endorsers is growing!

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW

We need to have our newly elected government committed to deep decarbonization. That requires that we END any approvals for new fossil fuel projects, any funding through subsidies either in Canada or abroad (as through the Export Development Corporation), and end exploration permits.   We also need a commitment to a planned  phase out of fossil fuel use in favour of renewables. No community in the world can reduce its own emissions enough to protect its residents from the impacts of rising CO2 levels.  We need a global strategy – and Canada could be a leader.  That’s why this is so important to raise during this election.

TIMELINE FOR DELIVERY OF LETTERS AND PLEDGES TO CANDIDATES

We are sending letters to all of the party leaders and candidates in as many ridings as we can in Ontario and across Canada. This letter will say: here’s what the FFNPT is and why we are asking you to sign this pledge.  If you are willing to sign it, we’d like to make an appointment with you in your office or in the community.  We’ll be coming through your riding on (a date between Sept 4 and 7) and can bring you the pledge at that time.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We are looking for a team of volunteers in the GTA ridings to find out how we can communicate with the candidates in each riding (email, phone number, office address if there is one), so that we can develop a complete an email list. You can help by providing contact information for the candidates in your riding.

Then we are looking for volunteers to deliver hard copies to the campaign offices

THIS IS A SHORT TIMELINE- PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP!

Please let us know if you can help in your riding. You can help us plan without even leaving your home!  We would appreciate help with outreach and promotion in your riding for several days to provide continuity for the walk/cycle/transit travelling message!

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN MORE INFORMATION OR WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE

Please fill in this form and we will connect you with others in your riding to form a team.

WE ARE REALLY MAKING A DIFFERENCE ON CLIMATE!

Everything we are doing to raise the alarm on climate – and the expectation for effective action by the next government – is a huge contribution towards the global transition that we need this decade.

The IPCC report released August 9th was a wake up call to the world (a ‘Code Red’ for the planet) and we need fast action.  The IPCC has called for cuts of 45% by 2030. NGO’s call for a 60% cut by 2030.  But cuts have not even started so we have a very short timeline to do our very best to keep temperature rise under 1.5 degrees.

Here are the asks from the Parliamentarians pledge:

  • End new expansion of oil, gas and coal production in line with the best available science as outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the United Nations Environment Program;
  • Phase out existing oil, gas and coal in a manner that is fair and equitable, taking into account the responsibilities of countries for climate change and their respective capacity to transition;
  • Commit to and pursue transformational policies and plans to ensure 100% access to renewable energy globally, support economies to diversify away from fossil fuels, and enable people and communities across the globe to flourish through a just global transition.
  • Enact national budgets and fiscal policies that will support this swift and just transition nationally and globally; Ensure the timely and adequate delivery of public, additional and non-debt creating climate finance as part of the obligations of rich, industrialised countries to address climate change

For the future,
