In Ontario, there are over 6,500 megawatts of AI data centres requesting to be connected to our electricity grid. That's enough electricity to power about 6,500,000 homes. That is an enormous amount.
We can't afford AI data centres. The cost that they pose to public infrastructure is huge and a lot those costs currently either get added to our electricity bills as ratepayers or as taxpayers. In addition, AI data centres are getting planned to be built in the name of "economic growth" in Ontario without consideration for people, public health, the environment, public health, risks to unemployment, and privacy/surveillance.
This is why we need an immediate moratorium on AI data centres in Ontario, including at the municipal level. This letter calls for three things:
1. Immediate moratorium on all AI data centres applying.
2. Immediate transparency on all AI data centre applicants.
3. Public consultation and transparency on all existing/expanding AI data centres.

Dear name_of_politician,
I am writing to you because I am greatly concerned about the impact of AI data centres on my life, the life of future generations, and the environment. The development of AI data centres mostly benefit corporate and financial interests rather than people.
To start, the scale of AI data centres trying to get built is enormous. For example, in Ontario there are over 6,500 megawatts of AI data centres requesting to be connected to our electricity grid. That's enough electricity to power about 6,500,000 homes. This number is from 2025 and presumably much higher today and growing.
Who else has either already introduced or passed a moratorium on data centres?
New York - Already passed (a one-year moratorium on data centers over 20 MW)
Maine - Vetoed (a moratorium on data centers over 20 MW until November 2027)
Vermont - Introduced (moratorium on data centers until 2030, requires impact study)
Michigan - Introduced (local governments and the public service commission may not permit or approve new data centers until April 2027)
Pennsylvania - Introduced (Three-year moratorium on new data centers, paired with impact studies; or empower municipalities to prohibit data centers)
Georgia - Introduced (forbids local governments from permitting data centers until December 2028)

We can't afford to have AI data centres here. The cost that they pose to public infrastructure and social and environmental well-being is big. AI data centres are in the process of getting approved without consideration of people, public health, the environment, public health, risks to unemployment, privacy/surveillance and women’s rights. Please stand up for voters and protect everyday people from the profit-driven, power grab of AI tech firms, corporate real estate companies, and the oil and gas industry.
This is why I call on you to pass an immediate moratorium on AI data centres as regulations and enforcement measures catch up. This includes any data centre that requires 10 mega-watts or more of electricity.
Here is what I expect from you:
Pass an immediate moratorium on AI data centres.
Provide immediate transparency on all AI data centre applicants.
Conduct public consultations on all existing/expanding AI data centres, as well as on-going transparency.
